Robert James Smith (Blackpool, April 21, 1959) is the British singer, guitarist and keyboardist of the new wave band The Cure. Smith wrote much of The Cure's material and is often seen as a foreman. Throughout the group's many line-up changes, he remained the only constant in The Cure, while Simon Gallup also rejoined the band over time. In the 1980s, depressed Smith with his black hair and poetic and gloomy lyrics was a teen idol.

In those years The Cure almost collapsed due to all conflicts and due to all the changes, he almost completely took on the recordings of the album The top, except for the drum sessions. On the caption of the 2006 reissue, he wrote about his share of the album: it was basically “the solo album I never made.” Smith also played guitar in Siouxsie and the Banshees (1979-1984). He married Mary Poole in 1988.
